Just Training
10 June 2009I don’t have much to report for this week. Paul and I did get a 4 mile run on Wednesday evening (6/3/09) while the boys were out at the movies with some friends. Rather than run in the neighborhood across the street like we normally do, we decided to run down McCullough Road, which is a pretty busy road @ 5:00 in the afternoon. I didn’t get to daydream much on this run, I spent 50 minutes dodging cars. How many couples can say they used free time away from their kids to run? And really, why in the world would they want to?!
Â
Saturday morning, we got up to ride our normal 20 miles but we didn’t make a wise decision. We knew that we didn’t have an extra tube and if one of us had a flat, we were done. Well we didn’t make it very far, I had a flat 5 miles into the ride but Blake and Paul couldn’t hear me because the traffic was too loud. I had to just pull over to the side and wait until they noticed that I had fallen off the pace. I knew Paul would eventually notice, he’s very good about checking to make sure we’re there. They noticed and came back. Rather then try to finish the ride, Paul left Blake and I together (we found a safe place out of the way) and he rode his bike back to the house to get his truck. Oh well, at least Paul managed to get a 10 mile ride out of it.

Sunday morning, my long run morning, started out like normal, HOT! Man, it’s getting hot earlier and earlier now. How are we gonna get through the summer?? We changed the route again. We ran down Joor Road, which is even busier then McCullough Road. I’m quite sure that my mom and dad would have heart failure if they came upon me running on that road….or maybe they would be impressed that I had the courage to do it.  I enjoyed running in this new neighborhood, a change of scenery can really boost a long run. I found myself daydreaming again but for once, it wasn’t about my job. This past week was actually a better one and I’m so grateful for that. I spent my time thinking about a strategy for getting through 26 miles. A teammate has me scared now, and he knows who he is! Here I was thinking that I would actually run for 26 miles….what was I thinking? I have to come up with some kind of run/walk strategy. That may sound easy for some folks but I struggle to resume running once I stop and walk. I talked to Paul about it and he raised a few points that I really need to consider. It never occurred to me that I would need to stop for a bathroom break along the way! I have a simple mind….run from point A to point B, that’s all I need to know.Â

My faithful ‘water boy’ wasn’t out on this run. Mr Jimmy has me spoiled! 8 miles later, I’m done and Paul is waiting for me at the end of the driveway with a cold Powerade. But the real fun started when Paul took Timbeaux’s advice and decided to soak his legs in an ice bath. Oh my goodness, that has to be one of the funniest things I’ve heard or seen in a long time. It was priceless and from what I heard and witnessed, it must be rather painful too!

Sorry to hear about the bike ride. Don’t let you know who scare you. You will figure out how you are going to approach this 26 miles as you go thru the training. soaking in ice does hurt. the kids and Tim laughed at me last year. They do help.
